Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Overview & Info
Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek – Enjoy a Breathtaking Sunrise Over the Annapurna Range
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is an 8-day short and scenic trek in Nepal’s Annapurna region, famous for its spectacular sunrise from Poon Hill at 3,210 meters. The trek combines Himalayan mountain views, rhododendron forests, traditional Gurung villages, and comfortable teahouse stays. Starting with your arrival in Kathmandu, the journey continues to Pokhara and then through Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani, and Ghandruk before returning to Kathmandu.
Reaching an altitude of 3,210 meters at Poon Hill, this trek is an excellent choice for travelers who want to experience the Himalayas without committing to a long or high-altitude expedition. The classic route usually takes 4 to 8 days from Pokhara, depending on the starting point and walking pace.
The highlight is the early-morning climb to Poon Hill for sunrise. On a clear day, you can see Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Hiunchuli and other Himalayan peaks glowing in the morning light.
Unlike many longer Himalayan treks, Ghorepani Poon Hill can be completed with relatively little time while still offering an authentic mountain trekking experience.
Why Choose the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek?
If you have only a few days in Nepal but want to walk through the Himalayan foothills, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the best options.
The trail passes through terraced farmland, stone villages, lush forests and rhododendron-covered hills. In spring, the forests are particularly beautiful when rhododendrons are in bloom.
The trek is also culturally rewarding. Villages such as Ghorepani, Tadapani and Ghandruk provide opportunities to experience local mountain life, traditional architecture and Gurung and Magar hospitality.
Is Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Difficult?
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is generally considered easy to moderate, but it should not be mistaken for a completely easy walk.
The biggest physical challenge is the repeated stone steps, particularly around Ulleri. Most trekking days involve around 4–7 hours of walking.
You do not need previous high-altitude trekking experience, but regular walking or cardiovascular exercise before the trek will make the experience much more enjoyable.
The trek is suitable for:
- First-time trekkers
- Couples
- Families with active children
- Senior travelers with reasonable fitness
- Photographers
- Nature lovers
- Birdwatchers
- Travelers with limited time in Nepal
Best Time for Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek
Spring: March to May
Spring is one of the best seasons for the trek.
The hills become colorful with blooming rhododendrons, the weather is generally pleasant for walking, and mountain views can be excellent.
March and April are particularly attractive for travelers interested in flowers, forests, photography and birdwatching.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is another excellent trekking season.
After the monsoon, the atmosphere is often clearer and the mountain views can be spectacular. October and November are especially popular.
Winter: December to February
The trek can still be completed in winter, but temperatures around Ghorepani can be cold and snow is possible at higher points.
Warm clothing, good footwear and flexibility are recommended.
Monsoon: June to August
The trail can be wet and slippery during the monsoon. Clouds and rain may also reduce mountain visibility.
For the best combination of mountain views and comfortable trekking conditions, spring and autumn are generally the preferred seasons.
Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek for Birdwatchers
The Ghorepani route also passes through excellent Himalayan forest habitat.
Birdwatchers may encounter species associated with the mid-hill forests, including laughingthrushes, babblers, tits, minivets, woodpeckers, flycatchers and other Himalayan forest birds.
For serious birdwatchers, we recommend adding extra time or combining the trek with birding destinations around Pokhara, Kathmandu or other parts of Nepal.
A local birding guide can also help identify species that are easily missed by general trekkers.
What Can You See from Poon Hill?
Poon Hill is famous for its sunrise panorama across the central Himalayas.
Depending on weather and visibility, you may see:
- Dhaulagiri
- Annapurna I
- Annapurna South
- Hiunchuli
- Machhapuchhre (Fishtail)
- Nilgiri
- Tukuche Peak
- Other peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges
The view changes quickly as the first sunlight reaches the mountains, making sunrise one of the most memorable moments of the trek.
Accommodation During the Trek
Accommodation is provided in local teahouses and mountain lodges.
Rooms are generally simple, clean and comfortable, usually with twin beds. Facilities become more basic as you gain altitude.
Most teahouses have communal dining areas where trekkers can enjoy meals and meet other travelers.
Hot showers, Wi-Fi and charging available at some lodges for an additional charge.
