Phulchoki Hill

Phulchowki Hill, located about 20 km southeast of Kathmandu, is one of Nepal’s premier birding destinations. Rising to an altitude of 2,782 meters, it is the highest point in the Kathmandu Valley and boasts rich biodiversity. The hill is part of the Phulchowki Forest, a subtropical evergreen ecosystem that supports over 300 bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

Birding at Phulchowki offers sightings of many rare and endemic species. Notable birds include the Himalayan cutia, along with the cutia, red-billed leiothrix, and various laughingthrushes. In winter, migratory species such as the ultramarine flycatcher and Green-tailed sunbird add to the diversity. The forest also hosts raptors like the mountain hawk-eagle and steppe eagle.

Birders typically start early in the morning, trekking along forest trails while scanning the canopy and undergrowth. The changing altitude zones provide diverse habitats, from dense oak and rhododendron forests to open meadows. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the best seasons for birding, offering clear skies and increased avian activity.

Phulchowki’s proximity to Kathmandu makes it an accessible yet rewarding birding location, ideal for both amateur and experienced birders eager to observe Nepal’s rich avifauna in a serene natural setting.
